Looking Over Almost 900 Years of History

Kenilworth Castle was built over many centuries, originally being founded in the 1120s around a Norman great tower by Geoffrey de Clinton, Lord Chamberlain to Henry I. The castle was greatly enlarged at the beginning of the 13th Century by King John adding huge water defences and improving its fortifications. It wasn't then until the late 14th Century that John of Gaunt turned the castle into a palace fortress. The Earl of Leicester was next to add to the now palace fortress with new Tudor buildings.

In 1649 the fortifications were rendered unusable by parliamentary forces to prevent it being used as designed. After this only two of its building were left habitable. It then wasn't until the 18th Century that the castle became a tourist destination. In 1984 English Heritage took over the management of the castle and its day to day running.

This panorama was shot on a nice and sunny family day out. The whole day was spent exploring the castle ruins and looking around the newly restored Elizabethan gardens (the gardens can be seen to the left of the castle ruins).

Taken with a Nikon D300 and a Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G fisheye lens. Mounted on a Nodal Ninja 5 panorama head atop a Manfrotto 055XPROB tripod. Shots taken at 6 positions 60° apart, tilted 15° down and another shot taken looking straight up. Raw files then processed in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 3 before being stitched together using PTGui Pro 9.0 and converted using Pano2VR 3.0 beta 3.
