A Sugar Maple grove on the summit of Loch Lomond Ski Hill in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. We are located on the northwestern-most edge of the growing region for this particular type of tree, however we don't often see a grove of this size. With the change in climate over the past 15 years, these Sugar Maples have flourished in a zone not normally associated with the requirements best suited for Sugar Maple growth.
They are found along the cross-country ski paths spanning the mountain ridge between Big Thunder and Loch Lomond Ski areas. The cross-country ski trails provide recreation every season with amazing views of the Kaministiqua River delta and Lake Superior year round.
Visitors to the top of the mountain were invited to samples of pure maple syrup created from this very forest. Just up the path is
a vista of the
Sleeping Giant, Lake Superior and Loch Lomond. Through the trees is a western view of
the sunset over the Nor'Wester range.
