The Latin schools were founded by the divine gentleman of the Pieterskerk (Pieters church). They wanted to have an amount of good speaking Latinists that were able to sing in the choir of the church. All lessons were taught exclusively in the Latin language. The most famous pupil of this particular school was of course Rembrandt van Rijn.
In the year 1620, at the age of 10, he started to study here. When he was 15 he registered at the University but he didn't finish his studies. Anyway, being a student, he had the advantage that he could drink tax-free beer and wine.
