The Pohutukawa tree (Metrosideros exelsor) is known as our Christmas Tree! Flowering from late November, through December into early January, it is the harbinger of summer. If last years Sustenance theme had been at this time of year, the Pohutukawa and its nectar laden flowers would've been it! It is a coastal tree with multiple, spreading trunks, some high, some low. I wanted low flowering trunks so I could get up close to the flowers. I cased French Bay out a few days beforehand but the lower flowers were only in bud. I came back a few days later, and as early in the day as I could as the bay faces south. (The sun rotates from right to left through the North when facing North!). It was happenstance that it was Summer Solstice Day!

Behind the scene : how this panorama was made
I made bracketed shots for this pano but just the slightest breeze, which there was, made the tree, close and far, but close especially, MOVE! I ended up just using a single set of images and even then had to do some 'cut and paste' in photoshop to get it looking reasonable. Not that I minded, Pohutukawa are one of my favourite things!
