Since 1992 this bit of shoreline just outside downtown Honolulu has been a public park. Its grassy hills provide panoramic views of city and ocean, and are topped with curious rain-proof pipes. That's because the 30-plus acre site is built upon a former landfill. The pipes help vent gasses from the debris below.
But don't let the unpleasant past deceive you. It sports an amphitheater, two memorial sites, two bronze sculptures, a lookout with a giant compass, board surfing, body surfing and fishing, and all the accouterments of a large city park.
This is just across a channel where my 2005 submission for "Water" was taken.
