This field of rocks (champ de roches in french) is a mystery. It is approximately 40 meters wide and 400 meters long and consists of rocks of more or less similar size and shape, mostly made of granite, although some are sandstone and gneiss. But why is it there? No one really knows.
One theory is that it's the result of morainic deposits from the last ice age. But moraines usually consist of all sizes of rocks, and usually show traces of friction. And why would this field not be overgrown by forest in the last 20,000 years?
Or was the surrounding land previously used for agriculture, the rocks were removed from the fields by the farmers and the forest came, when the fields were abandoned? But there are still lots of rocks in the surrounding forest.
Or is it simply a blockfield (felsenmeer), which would also be of ice age origin? But in a blockfield, all blocks should be made of the same type of rock.
