On September 3rd about 2000 climate activists were marching for climate justice and against the displacement of people at the Garzweiler open pit lignite mine, about 40 kilometers north-west of Cologne, Germany.

In recent months, the nearby hamlet of Lützerath has become the rallying point for the climate movement and citizens' initiatives fighting against lignite mining and the eviction of local residents. Under Lützerath lies coal that, if burned, would produce enough emissions for Germany to miss its climate targets by far. But the politicians are still planning to destroy Lützerath and to mine coal there. The activists demand: "people over profits!"

All houses in Lützerath have now been bought or expropriated by the mine operator RWE, but activists have occupied them, built treehouses on nearby trees and plan to fight against a coming eviction.
