Red Moss Carbon Capture Facility

You were looking for an industrial facility? A factory? Technology is not the answer to Climate Change. Technology got us into this mess! But this site with its heather blooming red & purple shows how nature can help, if we let it. This is Red Moss near Balerno, a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

Under the heather is a peatland about 6 metres deep, a dome of decaying matter which over 10,000 years since the last ice age has created peat from dead plants & animals. To do this, carbon is captured from the atmosphere. The area is also a valuable habitat for plants and insects.

The UK has approximately 2.97 million hectares of peat, covering 12% of the landmass. 65% of this peat is bog, similar to Red Moss. 5% has already been dug up for gardening or otherwise has been lost.

Peatland supplies about 25% of the UK's drinking water, some of which is used in the making of fantastic Scotch whisky!  With 134 distilleries, each using its own unique "water" is just one of whiskies secrets. Unfortunately, only 22% of the UK’s peatland is now in its natural condition. Damaged peatland can emit carbon, but a well managed peat bog in good condition can store about 3.5 tonnes of carbon per hectare per year.

A UK program to restore damaged peatland now operates with ambitious targets to protect the environment from the release of greenhouse gas through reversing the impact of drainage & farming that was actively encouraged in the 1970s.

Red Moss is a small peatland, on its own it won’t solve the Climate Crisis, however we need to think differently, and this is one step along the way...
