Roanne city's river port at moonrise.
Loire River is an impetuous riverand and is not navigable. At the beginning of the 19th century canal was created in parallel to the river so that barges would be able to carry goods as far as to the northern part of the country.
Nowadays, river trade no longer exists and barges are of course no longer used as carrying boats.
So Roanne city's fluvial port is now just something like a pleasant and enjoyable marina; some barges have been turned into floating houses. Many people from abroad are spending here their holidays and even more : some live here year-round.
