Usually at least once a year the river floods, sometimes a little, and sometimes not so. This wall records most of the recent not so little events. Whilst most of the dates are from the 19th and 20th centuries, the full range covers almost 350 years from 1672 (very top) to Feb 12 2014 (far right).
To put all this into scale the 2014 flood was recorded at 5 meters (up to the horizontal line on the stone) higher then the normal river level, over 2 meters higher than the floor and well above the eye level of this panorama! Combine this with the fact that the riverbanks on both sides are about the same height and you start to see how much disruption flooding like this can cause, effectively cutting the city in two.
