The Niederwalddenkmal commemorates the foundation of the German Empire after the end of the Franco-Prussian War 1870/71.
With a short ferry ride from Bingen to Rüdesheim and using the Seilbahn to travel up the steep hill will take you to several walkways, each eventually leading towards the Niederwalddenkmal revealing a tremendous view over the rhine river. As the Niederwalddenkmal faces north, looking south you can view Bingen am Rhein and the Rochusberg. Depending on the weather, you may also see part of Wiesbaden when looking east.
