The
Edersee Dam was completed in 1914 and was filled with water in the same year. Three villages including two graveyards and two bridges have been flooded.
Now and then, when the summer is dry, the old ruins emerge from the water and people can visit these places again. The last time it happened in 2011. For the WWP event "History" I made a panorama of
the old bridge of Asel which you still can cross when the water level is low enough.
The old town of Berich and the old graveyard of Berich are emerging later than the bridge of Asel from the water. At a
water level of 231m above sea level the graveyard is comming out of the water. The normal water level of the Edersee is 245m above sea level. That is 14 meters missing, or with a full lake the graveyard is 14 meters under water!
The graveyard of Berich was used until 1906. To prevent damage from flooding, it was covered with concrete before the artificial lake was filled the first time and
numbers on a small stone on every grave are telling you who is buried here.
Rest in Peace.
