In 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius erupted, burying the Roman city of Pompeii in 20 feet of volcanic ash and pumice. Most of the cities approximately 20,000 residents died in the eruption. The city was lost for about 1,500 years until the ruins were discovered in 1599.

Casa del Fauno (House of Faun) was one of the largest private residences in the city of Pompeii. It covers almost 3,000 square meters and occupies an entire city block. During excavation many works of art were discovered in this home. These artifacts remained buried for centuries under layers of ash, and have been preserved due to the lack of air and moisture.

Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has been popular with tourists for over 250 years. It is one of Italy’s most visited attractions.
