El Rey Mayan Ruins Part 1

The El Rey pyramid ruins are in the Southern end of the Cancun Hotel Zone and can be easily reached by taking public transportation R1 or R2 bus on Kukulcan Blvd to the site located at KM 17. The bus ride costs 10 MXN peso's (2014 12.5 MXN/US$ = 80 cents) each way per passenger. Just ask the bus driver to stop at EL Rey at Kilometer 17. National Park entrance admission is about US$3 for adults and children are free. Be sure to bring good walking shoes and a bottle of water.

The ancient Mayans are believed to have lived in El Rey between 1550 BC to 300 AD, when the Spanish conquest began. El Rey, meaning "The King" in Spanish, was named for a sculpture of a nobleman and a skull found at the site honoring the Mayan sun god.

Many visitors enjoy taking pictures of the hundreds of Iguanas that call the ruins home. The Iguanas are unafraid of humans as the park guides keep them well-fed with tortillas or the occasional lost tourist.

The El Rey Ruins are a great way to see Mayan ruins without the 2 -3 hour bus trip to Chichen Itza or Tulum.
