One of the more significant pathways to human mortality is the automobile. Roadside memorials are a phenomenon that one sees more and more, particularly in the central and western United States.

Generally erected at the location of fatal accidents by relatives, in some places, after initial official resistance, they are placed by local authorities to induce drivers to exercise caution by illustrating the body-count, particularly in high fatal-accident corridors.

Whatever their origin, they have become a constant visual reminder of just how temporary life can be.
