This sculpture, titled “Rabboni”, was created by artist Gutzon Borglum, who is best known for his work “Mount Rushmore”. The statue marks the grave of Washington banker Charles Matthews Ffoulke and depicts Mary Magdalene emerging from Christ’s tomb. The weathered face appears more ghoulish with black “tears” falling from the figure’s eyes.
On the back of the stone structure bears a bronze plaque bearing the names of members of the Ffoulke family along with the inscription:
- The end of birth is death
- The end of death is life and
- Wherefore mournest thou
