Not many people enjoy Brussels sprouts, but they can be quite good when cooked in garlic butter and drizzled with balsamic vinegar. Despite a dry summer in New York, our crop has been bountiful this year.

Vegetables of many types are necessarily part of a healthy diet, and growing them in our own garden ensures that we know they're free of chemicals of all sorts. Further, we believe that the experience of preparing a garden, planting seeds, tending plants, identifying pests, and finally harvesting, then freezing or canning the results for storage provides a necessary part of our kids' early life education.

We grow a variety of plants every year, some of which can be seen in this image, although others have already been harvested. Visible are tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, beets, beans, sweet corn, popcorn, pumpkins, gourds, Italian basil, Thai basil, peas, sunflowers, fennel, broccoli, Swiss chard, potatoes, soybeans (edamame), salad greens, dill, parsley, and green peppers. In addition, we have four kinds of grape vines surrounding the garden and defining its edges, and we include some marigolds and hollyhocks for color, fragrance, and natural pest control.
