While not at the level of those found in the Serengeti, the mud holes formed by the summer 'monsoon' rains are no less Necessary to the survival of wildlife of the Mogollan Plateau in Northern Arizona.

Birds, jackrabbits, coyote and even cattle (this part of the National Forest is open range) all visit the mud hole for weeks after a heavy rain. The 'monsoon' rains of summer in this area variably refresh the water level. This year was quite wet compared to normal so this large mud hole still has visible water weeks after the last monsoon rainfall.
