We visited an area full of historic icons—the most recognizable is the Statue of Liberty, and of course the famous New York City skyline—including the Empire State Building and the new Freedom Tower. We also visited Ellis Island which can be seen from here. If you are planning a visit to the Statue of Liberty, they are doing renovations beginning the end of October, 2011, and it will be closed for about a year. And I could not take a tripod inside.Had an interesting choice when selecting the location—New York or New Jersey. Depending upon what web site you read you can find multiple answers. The history of ownership has been in courts starting in 1674 between New Jersey and New York.
The best answer seems to be portions of the island that are above water are part of New York, while all of the submerged land surrounding the statue belongs to New Jersey.
