History

Pasai San Pedro and Pasai Donibane guard the entrance to the bay and the port of Pasajes. Arriving at Donibane from San Pedro in the small boat, that continuously transports those who need to move from one side to the other, we are faced with two reminders of that misty history that seemed to exist only in our old school books : a picturesque little chapel, to which we would probably not pay much attention, and on its right side, a mansion with a plate and a face in relief, a few meters high.

When "History" was proposed for 2011's Autumn's WWP event, this small place was what came first into my mind. Not because anything particularly relevant had taken place here, but just because every time I go there, it makes me somehow realize that history... well, yes, there was once one. Really.

The chapel, built in the 16th Century, hosts an inscription that celebrates the victory in The Battle of Roncevaux/Roncesvalles/Orreaga Pass against Charlemagne, on the 15th of August, 778. The slab states that the Marquis de Lafayette set off from this port on April 27th, 1777, to help the American Colonies, now the United States of America, in their fight for independence from England.

Two dates, widely separated, two very different times. History.

Pasai Donibane y Pasai San Pedro guardan la entrada de la bahía y el puerto de Pasajes. Llegando a Donibane desde San Pedro en la pequeña barca que continuamente transporta a quienes necesitan pasar de un lado a otro, nos encontramos frente a frente con dos recordatorios de esa historia que parecía no existir más que en los libros de texto que estudiábamos de nuestra infancia: una capillita pintoresca, a la que probablemente no dedicaríamos mucho tiempo, y una mansión a su derecha con una placa y un rostro en altorrelieve, a unos metros de altura.

Cuando se propuso como tema "Historia" este rincón es lo primero que se me ocurrió: no porque en él sucediera nada especialmente relevante, sino porque cada vez que paso por aquí es como si, de repente, esa historia de los libros se hiciera un poco presente.

La capilla, del siglo XVI, conserva una inscripción que celebra la victoria de Orreaga-Roncesvalles contra el ejército de Carlomagno, el 15 de agosto del año 778. Y la placa, por su parte, recuerda que el marqués de Lafayette partió desde este puerto el 27 de abril de 1777 para luchar por la independencia de los Estados Unidos de América.

Dos fechas lejanas muy entre sí, dos tiempos diferentes. Historia.

San Pedrotik Donibanera iristen garenean jendea batetik bestera eramaten duen txalupan, parez-pare eskolako liburuetan besterik existitzen ez zen historia zahar horrekin egiten dugu topo: hor bait dago kaperatxo txiki bat, non seguruenik ez genuke denbora luze emango, eta aldameneko etxe handian, lurretik 3 metrotara edo, plaka bat, buru bat erliebetan daukana.

"Historia" gaitzat proposatu zenean, bazter hau etorri zitzaidan burura lehen. Ez bertan ezer berezirik gertatu zelako, baizik eta hemendik pasatzen naizen bakoitzean historiaz benetan jabetzen naizelako.

XVI. mendeko Kaperak gordetzen duen idazkin batean Orreagako garaipena ospatzen da, Karlomagno enperadoreari 778ko buztuak 15ean irabazia. Eta etxeko plakak gogorarazten digu nola 1777ko apirilak 27an Lafayette Markesa portu honetatik sortu zen EEBBtarrei beraien independentziaren alde borrokatzen laguntzeko.
