Maastricht obtained the right to build town-walls in 1229, maybe earlier (around 1180). It evolved into an strategically important fortified town during the following centuries. The fortifications eventually covered an area of more than 250 ha.

Maastricht lost its fortress status in 1867 and soon after that the demolition of the fortifications including much of the extensive system of town-walls began. In the course of 1930 this campaign came to an end.

The panorama shows part of the remaining walls with the cheerful little river Jeker in the foreground.
