Castle and Historic Center of Town Monschau in the Eifel

The small historic town of Monschau, not far away from Aachen, is located in the Eifel National Park in western Germany. It is surrounded by small hills and the Rur River is flowing through the town. The famous historic and romantic center has a lot of half-timbered houses with slate-roofs that are very well preserved and nearly unchanged for about 300 years. The castle of Monschau is located on the Schlossberg (castle hill) and dates back to the 13th Century.

This panorama was shot from the main entrance of the castle at the so called "Eselsturm" (jackass tower) that you can see on the right. In front of you you can see the historic center of Monschau and the ruin "Haller" on the left hill on the other side.
