Tivoli Theatre

The Aberdeen Tivoli Theatre was originally opened as Her Majesty's Opera House on the December 19th, 1872, built to hold 1,650 people at a cost of £8,400.

During it's hey days in the 20th Century it was the venue for performances including the likes of Charlie Chaplin, W.C. Fields, Laurel & Hardy and George Formby.

With various modifications and owners it finally failed to attract the public away from their television screens and in the late 1960s the theatre was closed and turned into a bingo hall, which continued to be played at the Tivoli until the announcement of closure was made in January 1997.

Aberdeen's Tivoli Theatre was left abandoned, water damage and neglect now leaves this once grand building in a state of a bygone-era.

In July, 2009, it was sold again, this time to Brian Hendry of the Tivoli Theatre Company Ltd. who, with the help from Aberdeen City Heritage Trust, The Heritage Lottery Fund, Historic Scotland, Scottish Enterprise and the local councils, Townscape Heritage Initiative hopes to make this a thriving new performing arts venue for the North East of Scotland.
