I was hauling my pano kit around Seattle and wondering what I could shoot on the theme "Color" while running between music and post-production sessions to wrap up several videos under deadline. Finding a subject didn't look likely because I couldn't easily wander out of a post session to shoot something. But I guess I wasn't focusing too well on the problem, because it hit me when I arrived -- "Hey wait a sec! This is a Color Correction session, and I'm working with a Colorist!" My subject found me.
So welcome to a Color session in Seattle. This is where color gets it's final touches before a show delivers. Jeff Tillotson is the colorist, driving the DaVinci 2K today as he does scene-to-scene color correction on a video for a new emergency medical device. It's really something to see his hands fly across that elaborate control panel, and even more amazing to watch how quickly he can not only enhance the color and contrast in a shot, but then make it blend seamlessly into other scenes which might have been shot somewhere completely different under very different lighting. A good colorist brings color consistency and coherence to a show.
When you find a good colorist who works well with you -- hang on to that relationship! I've known Jeff for 20 years now as he worked at various companies around the US, then started up his own operation here in Seattle. That's my good fortune!
