The Sight of the Silver Fern ......
Oratia Free Range, Waitakere City, Aotearoa, New Zealand
10.15am Friday 21st September 2007 NZST
We call ourselves Kiwis. We have the Southern Cross on our flag. Our National Colours are Black with White. Our National Symbol is the Silver Fern.
Rowing, Maths, Cricket or Bowls, the 'All Blacks' in France vying for the Rugby World Cup, or our National Netball Team, the 'Silver Ferns', defending their World Title this November right here in Waitakere, win or lose, the sight of the Silver Fern is Sustenance to our hearts and souls!
The Silver Fern, Cythea Dealbata, is native to Aotearoa/New Zealand. It loves living in a mixed, regenerating rainforest as we have on the Free Range. These tree ferns can reach 10 meters in height with their fronds reaching 4 meters in length! The fronds are green on top and a really bright blue-green tinged white on the underside.
