The People Who Went Before were sustained by the sandstone canyons of the southwest for 1000 years.

The Anasazi people, generally believed to be the ancestors of the Navajo, Hopi and other southwest tribes, flourished from about 300 BC to 1300 AD in the canyons of the Colorado Plateau, an uplifted area of sandstone several thousand feet thick that includes parts of New Mexico, Colorado, Utah and Arizona. Water seeping through the sandstone created springs, and erosion created huge overhangs that sheltered their multi-level homes. Canyon bottoms were farmed then, and many canyons continue to be farmed by their decendents, the Navajo people.
