The most common means of transportation in the western world is probably the car (perhaps even surpassing our own two feet!), but we pay a heavy toll in accidents, deaths, and serious injuries.
Statistics show the situation to be improving in Portugal: numbers of both accidents and victims show a clear downward trend for the last 20 years, despite the fact that fuel consumption has been increasing steadily. On the other hand, polls show that over 80% of the drivers consider themselves good, careful, and safe, while thinking that most other drivers are the exact opposite. Clearly, there is room for further improvement, and education is the best way to do it.
“crash” is a project with the goal of raising awareness to the problem, by confronting people with cars and motor-bikes involved in crashes, as well as descriptions of the accidents, and the fate of those involved. I had other plans for the WWP transportation event, but since this initiative had a similar time frame as the event, I decided to change plans, in order to do my bit to help spread the message.
Going with the theme, the square features rather prominently the statue of a man on horseback, an important means of transportation of yore. You may also note a young lady, transporting her (our!) gorgeous baby on her back – both seemed very interested in the exhibit!
