Having been a Naval Aviator, I, of course, have a love of airplanes. I am fortunate that the local airport is relatively close by. When a plane goes overhead, I look up. In the late 80’s a plane went over that I didn’t have to look up to see what it was. I knew it was a magnificent flying machine known as a P-51.
Let me introduce you to
Crazy Horse, one of the true World War II heroes. Due to its range, it was able to escort the bombers all the way in and out of Germany. It ate German warplanes for lunch from 41,000 feet all the way to screaming a few feet off the ground. It shortened the war by allowing the bombers to complete their missions and return safely to base. This was in the time when air combat (dog fights) were up close and personal!
Crazy Horse is a dual cockpit/dual control P-51 Mustang built in 1944. It is one of only twelve dual control Mustangs in the world. There is nothing so distinctive as the sound of a Rolls Royce design Merlin Engine that causes boys of all ages to look up when it powers a P-51 overhead – a real neck twister.
After seeing it go over on several occasions, I tried to find out where it was based. I knew I was on the right track when I turned onto Merlin Drive. A few turns and I was in front of Stallion 51’s hangar. If you have the desire to fly a P-51 or just go for a ride of your life, come to Kissimmee, Florida and let the pros at Stallion 51 fulfill your dreams and then go up the road to Disney World.
