Part of the extensive New York State Barge Canal system, the Oswego Canal connects Lake Ontario to the Erie Canal. The canal has a series of locks which adjust the water level according to elevation changes in the terrain, and making the waters of the Oswego River navigable. Lock #8 is the final lock when headed north towards Lake Ontario. Once used as the primary means of goods transportation throughout the state, the canal system is now used primarily by recreational boaters.
