Built in Doncaster in 1937, Sir Nigel Gresley was named after it's designer in honour of the 100th LNER 4-6-2 A4 Class steam enginge to be built. Sir Nigel is the holder of the post-war speed record for a steam locomotive at 112 m.p.h. shown on the commemorative plaque on the side of the engine. The steam record was set in July 1938 and is still held by another A4 Class engine, the Mallard at 126 m.p.h

Sir Nigel is currently pulling passengers accross the North Yorkshire Moors from Pickering to Grosmont.

The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is an 18 mile line running from Pickering to Grosmont. The line run by the North York Moors Historical Railway Trust and is mostly operated by voluteers.
