Putting your car on the ferry saves driving around the head of the river at Truro cutting off around 20 miles of your journey. It's a fun ride too.
The panorama is a bit shady this late in the afternoon but that gives a nice sky. I chose this panorama so you can see the chains as it pulls away rather than one from the middle of river. It is a beautiful crossing though. If you would like to see view from the ferry in the middle of the river I notice Ken McMahon has done his panorama on the ferry as well and his shows the middle of the river. See http://geoimages.berkeley.edu/wwp906/html/KenMcMahon.html
The crossing has been running on chains since 1889 though this is actually a brand new ferry. It struck me as a bit quieter and less vibrating than the previous one. It is also blue instead of white and has a transparent side wall so the motorists can admire the view.
