I lived some 20 years in New York City, almost all of them in the outer boroughs. The last nine years of my stay there was on Staten Island. I loved the Staten Island Ferry, which was only a 20 minute walk from our house. I could walk to or from the ferry in the same amount of time, as it would take if I rode the bus. When riding the ferry, I almost always rode outside, except in the most inclement weather. I would watch the Manhattan skyline materialize in the morning. Then in the evening I would unwind after work with the tourist on the stern deck drinking a beer while watching the Manhattan skyline recede into the evening sky. It is a wonderful place for watching the scenery or people watching or talking with friends. Though most of my neighbors only complained about the ferry; the ferry remains my favorite mode of mass transportation. I was happy to find a reason to ride it again.
