Senescence

We fall
into slumber of horsetail
   swirl of littered stream

Amber feathers
Crushed sternum
   weightless bird in the cup of your hands

Forgotten leaves
we pressed between heavy pages
   dictionary of crumbling forest floors

The radiant warmth
of solace sinking
   beneath the bare thistle stalks

Bow down to the breeze
Rest your head against the earth
   welcome the coming torpor

Splendour behind weary eyes
Memory's last orange glow
   strikes the surface of energetic dreams
