Historical Oil Rig
Taft, Kern County, California, USA

Kern County is central to this production in the United States, and I chose to photograph my panorama at Kern County Oil museum, showing the re-construction of a wooden oil drilling rig, similar to those which first started going in Kern County around 1878.
While not anywhere close to its peak, there still are about 30,000 producing wells in Kern County, which provide 66% of all the oil produced in California, or about 10% of the total oil production in the entire United States, and about 1% of the total world oil production. All this from a region which used to be farmland.
Strangely with the heavy involvement of the oil companies, Kern County is still a fantastic beautiful natural environment and a very scenic experience., I can highly recommend a drive through the area; bring camera and plenty of water.
