Veszprem Viaduct

Veszprém is an old historical town, located about 110 km south-west of the capital of Hungary, Budapest. The town is surrounded by the Bakony Hills to the north and Lake Balaton to the south. This picturesque town, rich in historical buildings and monuments, was the religious, political and cultural center of the region during the Middle Ages. The oldest Hungarian bishopric and one of the first colleges - a college of law - were established here, in Veszprém.

Veszprém is called the Town of Queens, since it was favored by medieval Hungarian queens. Gizella, wife of Hungary's first king, St. Stephen, took refuge here when fleeing from rebels. Throughout the history the town attracted most of the Hungarian queens, many of whom having been crowned in Veszprém, which still pays tribute to its beloved queen with the Gizella Days, an artistic and scientific festival, taking place every May.

The dominant area of the city is the medieval castle-district, protruding from the middle of the town on a 30 m high dolomite cliff and the huge viaduct that arches over the Séd stream.
