In México, between the 1989 and 1994 a new national highway program was created. As part of this program, the federal highway "Cuernavaca - Acapulco" (also known as the "Route of the Sun") was rerouted resulting in a new route of 263 km, compared to the old 312 km route. This gave us a driving time of 3 1/2 hours from México City to the beautiful and famous port of Acapulco.
The design of the new highway required a crossing over the "Balsas" river (known at that point as the "Mezcala" river). This river has very step hillsides, separated from 800 m to 1,000 m that were necessary to connect. The construction of the "Mezcala" bridge, also known as the "Mezcala Solidaridad" bridge, made possible the link.
The "Mezcala" bridge is located in the state of Guerrero at kilometer 150+519 of the "Cuernavaca - Acapulco" highway with its origin at the Acapulco port. This amazing bridge was finished in 1993, is 882 m long, and is more than 300 m at its highest point.
