Construction of the Tokyo Wan Aqua Line began in May, 1989. By May, 1997, dugging by the world's largest class shield machines with a diameter of 14.14 meter, all tunnle and bridge had met. After 31 years from its initial survey by the government, it took eight years and 1.45 trillion yen (13.2 billion dollar) to build and was opened on 18 December, 1997.
Recommended for all visitors to the bridge is the Umi-hotaru parking area, artificial small island at the transition between the bridge and the tunnel. Inside the Umi-hotaru parking area is a wonderfull place.
