The orange exception

The theme for the second quarter of 2026, “Exception,” stayed with me for days. Many ideas came to mind, but none truly convinced me: they were valid, yet predictable, and they failed to convey that sense of surprise—the very essence of “exception”—that I was looking for.

Then, with the deadline almost upon me, something simple and unexpected happened. Passing by a greengrocer, Ayed of Mondofrut in viale Argonne, surrounded by neatly arranged crates and perfectly aligned colors, I suddenly saw what had been missing: the exception didn’t need to be constructed, only revealed. All it took was breaking the harmony.

I asked for permission and began to experiment. First, a crate of nectarines, where an apricot slipped in like a subtle yet discordant detail. It worked, but not entirely. Then my gaze shifted to the oranges: there, the intervention could be sharper, more immediate, more legible. A lemon, placed just right, suddenly became the protagonist.

In the end, it was this second image that stayed with me. More essential, more direct, able to tell its story without explanation. A small visual shift that breaks the order and redefines it.

After all, exception is simply a matter of perspective.
