Yes, 50 million years worth of geological and biological evolution have been studied by scientists along the 13km of stony puff-pastry like coastline that lay between Deba and Zumaia, in the Basque territory of Gipuzkoa shown in the pic. This type of geological formation is called 'flysch'. In fact, it begins further west, in what is known as 'the black flysch' -due to its colour- in Saturrarán. The layers there are the oldest, and some of their fossils are 100 million years old.

The most interesting layer is probably the KT boundary, which marks the transition between the Cretaceous and the Paleogene periods. This sediment layer was formed when a comet or asteroid 10-15 km in diameter hit the Earth about 66 million years ago. As a result of the climatic crisis and massive volcanic activity that followed the impact, the 70% of the species living on Earth disappeared: most fossils found before the impact marked by the KT boundary can't be found after it, and new species begin to appear: life evolves into new forms. The dinosaurs are the most famous victims of this violent episode.
