In the late 19th century, the first chemical factory was established in St. Johann, initially situated outside the residential zone. During World War I, it became a crucial supplier of dyes to the British textile industry, marking the industry’s first peak. By the 1930s, the site had expanded significantly, featuring extensive production halls and smoking chimneys, as can be seen on the picture. Over time, the dye industry transformed into pharmaceuticals, and today, a cutting-edge life science campus for pharmaceutical research and development occupies the same location. Since October 2022, the campus has been accessible to the public on working days, offering buildings designed by world-renowned architects, park-like green spaces and even public restaurants.
