Estadio Merida

The panoramic view shows the welcome portico to the "Estadio Merida", a stadium that was located in the vicinity of the Plaza Glorias Patrias. You can still see the fountain in the foreground, you can also see part of the bleachers in the parking lot of the shopping center (former CADA) and part of the field is occupied by the parking lot of the Park Hotel.

The classical style façade of the Mérida Stadium, which was the identification of this sports venue, was the work of the Colombian Romanesque master Marco León Mariño, who left Mérida enriched with his paintings and sculptures. The sculptures El Collado del Condor (El Águila Peak), the sculpture of the Liberator on Bolivar Peak, the initial Obelisk of the Plaza del Espejo, the Medallions of Humboldt and Bolivar, pictorial works in the El Carmen Chapel, the Cathedral, the El Espejo Church, etc.

The land of the old stadium was sold in the 1960s and the city of Merida was left without a stadium for soccer practice for several years.   The only fields for practice were those of the old Colegio San José, "Estadio Lourdes", which later passed into the hands of the University. Today, the grounds of the old Mérida Stadium house the CC Glorias Patrias, the Park Hotel and Gonzalo Picón Avenue.

The tireless struggle of a group of Merideños and adopted sons gave way to the construction of the "Guillermo Soto Rosa" Stadium, among them Soto Rosa himself, Luis Alberto Jiménez Ron, Espíritu Uzcátegui, Luis Ghersy, José de Arano, Manuel Padilla, Amadís Cañizalez, Jorge Pereira, Luis Cardona and others. The "Guillermo "Soto Rosa" Stadium was inaugurated on September 5, 1969 with the national youth soccer championship, where Mérida was titled champion.

Nowdays the main stadium of the city is the Metropolitan Stadium of Merida located in the complex "5 Águilas Blancas" at Zumba, which was inaugurated on December 7, 2005 in preparation for the celebration of the 2007 America's Cup.  It has a capacity of 42,000 spectators.
