As photography started being in color, audio recording appeared. Image and sound have ever since been tightly linked. But the sound, being lighter than the image, in terms of amount of data it vehicles, was first to be widely digitized. And movie theaters used one speaker, then three and nowadays up to 64 audio channels are feeding at least as many speakers. After being the privilege of the movie industry, the most famous of those techniques, Dolby Atmos, is now available also for music production. 

This panorama of the Mât Noir studio held by the sound engineer Patrice Lazareff shows a standard setup for mixing music in Dolby Atmos, known as 7.1.4 :

Four speakers for the elevation kings under the sky
Seven, for the medium lords in their halls of stone
One for the bass Lord on his dark throne...

Taken with a Nikon D810 + Nikkor 10.5mm DX AF Fisheye mounted on a Nodal Ninja 3 MKI head. One row of six shots + zenith/nadir. Optimized with Photoshop/Camera Raw, stitched with PTGui and KRPano Tools.
