The small chapel of Agios Ioannis Antzousis is located at the end of a windy bay of Ionnian Sea - Lefkada Island - integrated to a cave directly on the slopes where hard cliffes planted with cypresses, figtrees, miscellaneous mediterranean species give a generous shade and help to keep the chapel out of sight.
The church dates back from 65 A.D. - built by Franks according local sources - and is the oldest christian orthodox monument of Lefkada.
In the former cave, Paul the apostle is supposed to have been speaking about Jesus Christ for the first time to island’s inhabitants.
Everytime my greek routes are leading me to Lefkada, I do visit Agios Ioannis chapel, stay a few minutes looking at the sea, trying to feel totally the ambiance, the scents and fragrances present here. About 12 years ago, I made a panorama inside of the Church but never showed it to anybody.
When I came back this year, I noticed that the chapel has been quite newly painted : revival-like for the Agios Ioannis temple that I really prefer not so pretty-looking, like a puppet’s house…
