This photosphere shows a bit of the pageantry with its Opening Ceremonies in which various kingdoms declare and accept alliances for the year's two opposing sides. The image overlooks the main battlefield from the "castle," which is used in some of the fighting scenarios.
Martial activities at Pennsic include numerous unscripted battles with 1,500+ armed and armored participants on each side, as well as hundreds of archers shooting at a variety of standardized and novelty targets.
In addition to fighting, hundreds of classes and workshops transmit knowledge and how-to understanding on numerous topics of both wide interest and very narrow focus. Further, there are many and diverse vendors selling garb, armor, artist supplies, archery gear, food, period glass vessels, leather, etc., etc.
Of course at such a large annual gathering, there's a great deal of socializing. Music, dance, drinking, and story-telling occupy many during the evening.
"The Society for Creative Anachronism (SCA) is an international organization dedicated to researching and re-creating the arts and skills of pre-17th-century Europe. Our 'Known World' consists of 20 kingdoms, with over 30,000 members residing in countries around the world. Members, dressed in clothing of the Middle Ages and Renaissance, attend events which feature tournaments, royal courts, feasts, dancing, various classes & workshops, and more."
