Michelangelo Buonarrotti's Pietà, in Rome's St. Peter's Basilica, was seriously damaged by a mentally disturbed man with a hammer in 1972. The sculpture was restored, and the general public's access to it was cut. Since then on the forbidden chapel where the famous icon stands is protected by a bulletproof crystalline defence...

...hardly able to protect it from another kind of shots.
