The 3,500 sq. ft. skylight of the atrium at the Mall of America is made of electrochromic SageGlass, which is electronically tintable glass that automatically tints or clears in response to the sun, offering about a 20% savings in energy Tinting of the 300 individual panes can also be controlled manually and selectively, allowing the mall to create a giant Christmas tree shape in the skylight for the holidays.
Rich Hoge, Vice President of Operations for Mall of America, says “With SageGlass, we can control the amount of sun so that it is cool and comfortable in the mall, whether it is 9 degrees or 90 degrees outside. We also benefit from energy savings without having to block daylight with blinds or shades.”
Mall of America is the nation’s largest retail and entertainment destination. The 4.9 million square-foot complex attracts over 40 million of visitors annually for its shopping, dining, attractions and special events, the most of any mall in America.
