The Opal MinerThis tale may well have happened, back some sixty years or more
of an old time opal miner and the claim he did explore.
He worked that claim from dawn to dusk, far underground he'd toil.
He had no stones to show for it, just mounds of barren soil.
With long hours spent in solitude, he talked to God each day
for he believed that with his help, some gems he’d find someday.
But long hard years had wearied him ‘til on the ground he lay.
He felt his time was almost done, his life was slipping away.
Toward the wall he eased along, dug furrows in the ground,
and when he looked where he had lain, light sparkled all around.
He reached to touch the precious stones, but he could only stare
as coldness overcame him, for no warmth those stones would share.
Then from his eye a tear escaped - his heart no more did pound,
his grave a bed of opal stones, now hidden underground.
