This is a panorama of the Rosie the Riveter memorial structure in Rosie the Riveter/ World War II Home Front National Historic Park.This area was once the Kaiser shipyards where women were employed for the 1940 Emergency Shipbuilding Program. The program was begun to replace ships Britain had lost to German U-boats. Later, Henry J. Kaiser expanded the operation in Richmond to also encompass Liberty and Victory class ships. Many of the 740 ships launched from Richmond were Liberty and Victory class used in the US cargo fleet.
The US government actively recruited women into the workforce. By using icons like Rosie the Riveter, and the lesser known Wendy the Welder, many Americans overcame Depression era attitudes about females in the workforce. By 1944, 41% of the welders in the yard were women.
These women are the precursor of our modern day workforce. They redefined our gender in the workplace. This memorial is part of my heritage.
