While there is a spirit of competition, the primary purpose is gain experience in austere operating conditions and to provide information to the public and local officials about the capabilities of Amateur Radio during emergency conditions.
A big part of the event is that the public and newly licensed HAMs are invited to participate via a GOTA (Get On The Air) station and make radio contacts under the tutelage of more experienced HAMs.
The entire Field Day Event basically revolves around passing knowledge and experience from the older generation of HAMs to the new generation.
This pano shows the GOTA station at the Cocononino Amateur Radio Club & Northern Arizona DX Association's Filed Day site. In addition to the station, informational displays about Amateur Radio and hands on experience with Morse Code and other radio hardware is provided, Participants ranged from 6 to 60 years old.
