In every city there are statues, memorials or symbolic objects that represent someone or something significant for that culture. We can see them in many parts of the city, on the streets or at a square. Over the time we just walk by them without looking. Or we look, but we don’t see or realize them anymore. They get worn by the years, dirty by birds, and some people enjoy painting on them. They turn into forgotten places. Only a few remember what the symbols actually represent.The memorial object, 1923, in the panorama represents the date that the Republic of Turkey was officially proclaimed, October 29, 1923. Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was named as the republic’s President, Ankara became the capital, and the modern state of Turkey was born. I believe that not forgetting the idea behind symbols is more important than the care of the monuments themselves.
